When Life Becomes Tough

Updated: Oct 12
Don’t Give Up on Yourself
There are moments in life when the weight of everything we are carrying feels like it's too much to bear. Moments when we feel exhausted, overwhelmed, discouraged, or so deeply hurt that we wonder how we can possibly find the strength to take another step.
Perhaps you are facing the loss of someone you love.
Perhaps a relationship has broken your heart
Your health has changed your life
Financial worries keep you awake at night
You feel as though you have been fighting one battle after another without a moment to catch your breath.
You feel you don't have the skills to overcome what you are facing.
Maybe you have spent so much time being strong for everyone else that you have forgotten what it feels like to be supported yourself.
And perhaps, behind your smile, you are quietly asking, How much more can I endure?
If any of this speaks to your heart, I want you to know you do not have to be strong every moment of every day. You are human, and brings struggle - different for everyone.
When You Feel You Have Nothing Left to Give
Life doesn't always unfold the way we imagined it would. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, things fall apart.
People disappoint us.
Dreams change.
Doors close.
Circumstances arise that we never could have anticipated, and we find ourselves standing in a place we never wanted to be.
It is easy in those moments to believe that things will never get better. When pain becomes familiar and uncertainty stretches endlessly before us, when we don't have the strength or skills to move on, hope can feel like a distant memory.
But please remember this: The way you feel today is not a guarantee of how you will feel tomorrow.
You may not be able to see a way forward right now.
You may not have the answers, the energy, or even the desire to figure everything out.
You do not need to solve your entire life in one day.
Sometimes, courage is not about making a dramatic change, conquering a fear, or standing tall in the face of adversity.
Sometimes, courage is simply getting out of bed.
Taking a shower.
Answering a friend's call.
Asking for help.
Allowing yourself to cry instead of pretending everything is fine.
Sometimes, courage is choosing to make it through this one difficult moment at a time, or one day at a time. And sometimes, it is giving yourself permission to rest before you try again. There is no shame in any of this. We are human with limitations, strenghts and weaknesses.
You Have Survived Difficult Days Before
Think for a moment about the challenges you have already faced in your life. Remember the moments when you were certain you couldn't possibly get through something, yet somehow, you did. Remember the disappointments you thought would break you, the losses you thought you could never accept, and the difficult transitions you never believed you would navigate.
Look at how far you have come. You may carry scars from those experiences. You may have changed in ways you never expected. Perhaps you are still healing from things that happened years ago. But you are here. And although your past struggles do not mean that every new challenge will be easy, they remind you that you have lived through difficult chapters before.
There may be strengths within you that you have not yet discovered, possibilities you cannot yet see, and people who would gladly stand beside you if they knew how much you were hurting.
Please don't mistake being tired for being defeated.
You can be weary and still have a future.
You can be hurting and still experience joy again.
You can be uncertain about your next step and still move toward a better life one step at a time.
Your present circumstances are part of your story, but they do not have to be the ending.
You Don't Have to Do This Alone
One of the most painful misconceptions we can carry is the belief that we must handle everything ourselves. We tell ourselves that we don't want to burden anyone. We don't want to appear weak. We don't want to admit that we are struggling because we have always been the person others depend upon.
But even the strongest people need support.
Please reach out to someone you trust.
Talk honestly with a friend, a family member, a counsellor, or another compassionate professional.
You do not need to have the right words.
You don't need to explain everything perfectly.
Sometimes, simply saying, "I'm having a really difficult time, and I need someone to listen," is enough to begin.
If your circumstances feel impossible to manage, allow others to help you explore your options. There may be resources, solutions, or opportunities available that you cannot see while you are overwhelmed.
And if the people around you are contributing to your pain, remember that you are allowed to establish boundaries, seek safety, and step away from situations that are harming you. Compassion for others should never require you to abandon compassion for yourself. You matter, too. Your wellbeing matters. Your peace matters. Your life matters.
Give Yourself Permission to Begin Again
You do not have to return to the person you were before life became difficult. Sometimes, our hardest experiences change us deeply, teaching us to recognize what truly matters, what we can no longer accept, and where we need to make different choices.
Perhaps beginning again means rebuilding your confidence.
Perhaps it means letting go of a relationship, asking for professional help, changing direction, or accepting that healing takes longer than you hoped.
Whatever your circumstances, you are allowed to begin again, as many times as necessary. Start small.
Focus on what you can influence today rather than everything that frightens you about tomorrow.
Take a walk if you are able.
Spend time with someone who makes you feel safe.
Eat something nourishing.
Get some rest.
Write down one thing you can do to make tomorrow a little easier.
Notice the small moments of goodness that still exist, even in difficult seasons. A kind word. A comforting embrace. A moment of laughter you didn't expect. The realization that, for a few minutes, your heart feels a little lighter.
These moments may seem insignificant, but they can become stepping stones toward hope. You do not have to feel optimistic every minute. You only need to leave room for the possibility that life can change.
Never Give Up on Yourself
There is no promise that life will always be fair, that the people you love will never hurt you, or that every difficult situation will work out exactly as you hope. Life is full of unexpected turns. There is constant change to life's circumstances. People grow. New connections are formed. Opportunities emerge where none seemed possible before. And sometimes, the life we build after a painful chapter becomes meaningful in ways we could never have imagined while we were living through it.
So, if you are struggling today, please don't make a permanent decision based on a moment of unbearable pain. Reach out for support. Let someone know how you are feeling. If you are afraid you might hurt yourself, or you don't feel safe being alone, seek immediate help and stay with someone who can support you.
You deserve the opportunity to experience what comes next.
You deserve kindness, including your own.
You deserve the chance to heal, to laugh again, to discover new possibilities, and to experience moments that remind you why your life is worth living.
And you do not have to earn that right by being perfect, productive, successful, or strong. You are worthy simply because you are here.
Do NOT give up on yourself. Give yourself time. Give yourself compassion. Give yourself permission to ask for help, to change direction, and to take life one day at a time.
You don't need to see the entire road ahead to take the next step. You don't need to have everything figured out to begin healing. And you don't need to pretend that life is wonderful when, right now, it feels incredibly hard. Just keep reaching for support. Keep allowing room for possibilities. Keep taking those small steps toward a safer, healthier, more hopeful tomorrow. And when you cannot find the strength to believe in yourself, let someone who cares about you help you hold on to hope until you can find it again.
Your story is still unfolding. There are chapters you have not yet read, people you have not yet met, and moments of happiness you have not yet experienced. Do NOT give up ever.
Stay long enough to discover them. With compassion, hope, and the heartfelt reminder that you matter more than you may realize, Your life is a miraculous gift.
