Synchronicity

Updated: Oct 1
Have you ever thought about someone—and moments later they called?
Have you been considering a major decision, only to encounter a book, conversation, or unexpected event that seems remarkably connected to what you've been thinking about?
These experiences can feel like more than coincidence.
They may be examples of synchronicity.
What Is Synchronicity?
Synchronicity is a term associated with Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, who used it to describe meaningful coincidences—events that are not necessarily connected by an obvious cause and effect, yet seem deeply connected in meaning.
For example, you might be thinking about an old friend you haven't spoken to in years when you unexpectedly hear their name on the radio, receive a message from them, or encounter a photograph of them later that same day. The event itself may be coincidental. What makes it a synchronicity is the personal meaning and timing you experience.
Coincidence or Synchronicity?
Not every coincidence is necessarily a synchronicity. Life is filled with coincidences. We encounter millions of people, ideas, images, places, and pieces of information throughout our lives. Some will naturally overlap. Synchronicity is different because the coincidence feels unusually relevant to what is happening within you.
It may leave you thinking: “Why did that happen right now?” That doesn't necessarily mean the universe is sending you a specific instruction. Instead, the experience may invite you to pause and consider what it means to you.
Why Do Synchronicities Feel So Powerful?
Our minds are constantly recognizing patterns. When something personally significant appears at precisely the right moment, our attention naturally increases. Perhaps you're considering changing careers and suddenly hear three separate conversations about starting over.
Perhaps you're grieving someone who has died and repeatedly encounter something that reminds you of them. Perhaps you're questioning a relationship and an unexpected conversation gives you a new perspective. The experience can create a sense that life is speaking directly to you.
Whether you understand that spiritually, psychologically, intuitively, or simply as coincidence is a personal matter.
Synchronicity and Intuition
Synchronicity can become particularly interesting when it occurs alongside intuition. You may have an unexplained feeling that you should contact someone—and then discover that they were thinking about you too. You may feel drawn toward a particular opportunity and then encounter several unexpected connections that reinforce your interest.
These experiences don't prove that every intuitive impression is correct. They do, however, provide an opportunity to become more observant. Pay attention to what happens. Notice what you were thinking or feeling before the synchronicity occurred. Ask yourself: What does this mean to me?
That question is often more useful than immediately asking, “What does this mean?”
Should You Trust Every Synchronicity?
No. This is where discernment matters. A meaningful coincidence can be fascinating without automatically being a command, prediction, or guarantee about what you should do.
Don't make major decisions solely because you noticed a coincidence. Instead, consider the experience alongside your values, circumstances, evidence, intuition, and practical judgment.
Synchronicity can be an invitation to pay attention—not necessarily an instruction to act.
Start Noticing
If you want to explore synchronicity in your own life, keep a simple journal. Write down unusual coincidences, what you were thinking about beforehand, how you felt, and what happened afterward.
Over time, you may notice patterns. You may also discover something important about yourself: the more consciously you observe your experiences, the more aware you become of the connections you might otherwise overlook.
Perhaps synchronicity is coincidence. Perhaps it reflects the extraordinary pattern-recognition abilities of the human mind. Perhaps, for some people, it represents something more. You don't have to decide immediately. Sometimes the most valuable response to a meaningful coincidence is simply to pause, pay attention, and remain curious.
Explore Your Intuition
