Signs, Symbols & Meaning

When coincidence, intuition, and synchronicity intersect
Have you ever looked at the clock and seen 11:11—again? Perhaps a particular animal keeps appearing at unexpected moments. Maybe you have the same dream repeatedly, keep finding an unusual object, or think about someone just before they call.
Sometimes these experiences feel too perfectly timed to ignore. We may call them signs, symbols, synchronicities, or messages. But does every unusual occurrence have a supernatural explanation?
Not necessarily. And that doesn't mean it has no meaning.
We Are Wired to Notice Patterns
The human mind is remarkably skilled at recognizing patterns. Once something becomes important to us, we naturally become more aware of it. If you start noticing the number 222, for example, you may suddenly realize how often it appears.
This can happen through selective attention and pattern recognition. It doesn't necessarily mean that the universe is deliberately placing 222 in your path. But here's where things become more interesting. A psychological explanation doesn't automatically make an experience meaningless.
The fact that something catches your attention may tell you something about what is happening within you.
Instead of immediately asking, “What does this sign mean?” Try asking: “Why did this particular thing get my attention?” That question can open a much deeper door.
Numbers Can Become Personal Symbols
Recurring numbers are among the most common experiences people describe as meaningful.
Different spiritual traditions and systems of numerology assign symbolic meanings to numbers. But there is no universal rule stating that seeing a particular number means exactly one particular thing.
Your personal associations may be far more revealing.
Perhaps a number reminds you of someone's birthday. Maybe it appears whenever you're facing an important decision. Perhaps you notice it during periods of change. The significance may not be contained within the number itself. The significance may be in what the number brings forward in you.
Animals, Objects & Unexpected Encounters
Animals can carry powerful symbolic associations. A butterfly may represent transformation. An owl may symbolize wisdom. A raven might have entirely different associations depending upon someone's culture, beliefs, and personal experiences. But symbolism is not universal. The meaning of an animal—or any object—can be deeply personal.
Finding an old photograph may remind you of someone you've lost. A particular song may suddenly bring back an important memory. Seeing a childhood object may reconnect you with a part of yourself you've forgotten. The experience doesn't have to be supernatural to be profound. Sometimes the symbol simply gives your subconscious something tangible through which to speak.
What About Dreams?
Dreams occupy an especially fascinating space between memory, emotion, imagination, and symbolism. A recurring dream may reflect something unresolved. A person appearing in a dream may represent a memory, a relationship, an emotion—or simply the brain processing experiences from waking life.
For people with spiritual beliefs, dreams can also feel like intuitive experiences or communication.
There is no need to force a single interpretation. Instead, consider the emotional quality of the dream. How did you feel when you woke up?
Peaceful?
Frightened?
Comforted?
Curious?
Sometimes the emotion surrounding a dream tells us more than the individual symbols within it.
When Coincidence Feels Like Synchronicity
Carl Jung used the term synchronicity to describe meaningful coincidences—events that appear connected through meaning rather than obvious cause and effect.
You think about an old friend, and they call.
You have been wondering about a particular subject, and suddenly encounter it several times.
You are struggling with a decision, and a conversation unexpectedly brings the very issue into focus.
Is it coincidence?
Is it intuition?
Is it synchronicity?
Sometimes we simply don't know. And perhaps we don't always need to know. The important thing is to remain curious without surrendering discernment.
Not Every Sign Is a Message
This may be one of the most important distinctions when exploring signs and synchronicities.
Being spiritually open does not mean believing that everything has a hidden message.
A repeating number may simply be a repeating number.
A dream may simply be your mind processing the day.
An unexpected encounter may be coincidence.
And sometimes an experience may feel meaningful because it touches something already alive within you.
Healthy exploration leaves room for all of these possibilities. Rather than saying: “This happened, therefore something supernatural must be occurring.” Try asking: “This happened. What does it bring up for me?” That approach allows intuition and reason to exist together.
What If the Meaning Is Personal?
Perhaps signs aren't always instructions about what you should do next.
Perhaps they are invitations to become more aware.
More aware of your emotions.
More aware of your intuition.
More aware of relationships, choices, memories, and possibilities.
A symbol doesn't necessarily have to predict the future to be valuable. Sometimes it simply helps you pay attention to the present.
Are You Experiencing Signs or Synchronicities?
If recurring numbers, dreams, animals, symbols, or unusual coincidences have been appearing in your life, you may be wondering whether there is a deeper meaning behind them. You don't have to decide immediately whether they are spiritual messages, intuitive impressions, psychological patterns, or coincidence. You can explore them.
In a private intuitive session with me, we can look at the experiences and patterns that have been capturing your attention and explore what they may represent for you—while keeping discernment and personal meaning at the center of the conversation.
If you're ready to explore what your intuition may be trying to tell you, I invite you to book a private session with me. Visit www.terryandersen.com to learn more and schedule your session. Sometimes the sign isn't about predicting what comes next. Sometimes it's simply asking you to pay attention.
